Lesson Learned from Maleficent

Maleficent is one of the many Disney movies I’ve watched that can give me a quite deep inspiration. Everyone who loves to watch Disney movies will know that Disney movies always give good messages to the audience, but this movie is out of my expectation — because the main character is identical to the evil role and at first I thought how can the evil role give good messages to the audience?

But after I watched it, wow. Here are the lessons I learned from Maleficent:

1. Don’t judge someone before you learn about them

Maleficent is genuinely kind, innocent and sincere. When she was young, she fell in love with a boy named Stefan. She believed in him and give all her heart to him. Even on Maleficent’s 16th birthday, he gave her what he calls a true love’s kiss — but that was not to be. Then, sadly, Stefan betrayed her by cutting her wings off, only for his personal ambition. Of course Maleficent was very mad and disappointed being betrayed by the person she trusted and loved so much. That’s why Maleficent became a wicked woman. She took her revenge on Stefan by cursing Aurora (Stefan’s newborn daughter); on Aurora’s 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel spindle and fall into a permanent sleep. The curse can be broken by true love’s kiss, which Maleficent and Stefan believe is nonexistent.

Basically every human being is born innocent. However, what has happened to us during our life, that’s what changed us into how we are now. Everyone has their own story, which is certainly different from our stories. That’s why we can’t judge people before we listen to their story.

2. True love conquers all, and true love is not limited to a lover

As the years pass, Maleficent keep a close eye on Aurora. Maleficent has been watching her grow and she gradually begins to care for the young Aurora. Maleficent realizes that she cares for the girl and unsuccessfully attempts to undo the curse, but it is unbreakable other than by true love’s kiss. Meanwhile, Aurora meets a young prince named Phillip, and the two are attracted to each other.

And finally Aurora’s curse happened when she hit the age of 16. Maleficent, intent on saving her, abducts Phillip and infiltrates Stefan’s castle. But, Phillip’s kiss fails to awaken Aurora. Maleficent regrets her past mistakes. She tearfully apologizes to Aurora and kisses her forehead. Aurora awakens, as Maleficent’s motherly feelings for her goddaughter count as true love.

We know in most romance stories, true love only happens to lovers. But this movie really breaks this thing. True love can actually be found in anyone — in our parents, our best friends, or even our colleagues — who have a very strong inner bond with us that we didn’t realize at first.
